Enclosed vs. Open Shipping

When do I need Enclosed vs. Open Shipping?

At Team Alex, certain vehicles are required to ship in an enclosed trailer based on vehicle value, ground clearance, and the additional protection needed during transport.

Enclosed transport is required for:

  • Any vehicle with an insurable value over $100,000
  • Any vehicle with 5 inches of ground clearance or less

Soft-top convertibles, particularly on longer-distance transports, may also warrant enclosed transportation depending on the vehicle and circumstances.

Vehicles Valued Over $100,000

Vehicles valued over $100,000 may be significantly underinsured when transported on a standard open carrier. A typical reputable 9-car open hauler may carry approximately $250,000–$350,000 in cargo insurance, while enclosed carriers commonly carry substantially higher cargo limits, often ranging from $500,000 to $1 million.

Because of the potential insurance exposure, Team Alex policy requires vehicles valued over $100,000 to be transported in an enclosed trailer.

Low-Clearance Vehicles

Due to the increased risk of undercarriage damage during loading and unloading, Team Alex policy requires any vehicle with ground clearance of 5 inches or less to be transported in an enclosed trailer equipped to accommodate low-clearance vehicles.

Enclosed carriers designed for low-clearance vehicles typically have loading equipment and ramp configurations better suited for safely loading and unloading these vehicles.

Our goal is not simply to move the vehicle from Point A to Point B. It is to minimize unnecessary risk by using the appropriate equipment for the vehicle being transported.

At Team Alex, using the right equipment for the job is a critical part of protecting your vehicle throughout the transportation process.
